SMS Survey

SMS Survey lets you conduct multi-question surveys via SMS. Questions are sent one at a time; recipients reply with their answers, and WEL automatically sends the next question — branching to different questions based on each response if needed.

How It Works

  1. You build a survey with one or more questions and optional branching logic.
  2. The survey is sent to a recipient list — each recipient receives the first question as a 2-way SMS.
  3. When a recipient replies, WEL matches their answer against the configured logic and sends the appropriate next question.
  4. This continues until all questions are answered or the survey window closes.
  5. When the survey window expires, WEL emails a report of all responses to your nominated address.

Managing Your Surveys

Go to Send Message › Send SMS Survey to see your survey list. From here you can:

ActionWhat it does
Add SurveyCreate a new survey.
SendSend the survey to a recipient list (follows the standard list selection flow).
View ReportSee the aggregated responses for all sends of this survey.
EditModify the survey questions, logic or options.
CopyDuplicate the survey as a starting point for a new one.
DeletePermanently delete the survey.

The Jobs Sent column shows a link for each time the survey was sent, linking to the delivery report for that specific send.

Creating or Editing a Survey

Name & Description

Give your survey a Name (required) to identify it in the list. The Description is optional and for your reference only — recipients do not see it.

Survey Questions

Add one or more questions using the Add Question button. Each question is the text of an SMS sent to the recipient at that stage of the survey. The same SMS character limits apply — a live character counter appears while you type.

  • Drag to reorder — drag the handle icon to change the order questions are asked.
  • Delete — remove a question from the survey.
  • Answer Logic — configure branching for this question (see below).

Answer Logic (Branching)

By default, after a recipient answers a question WEL moves to the next question in sequence. Answer Logic lets you route recipients to a different question based on what they reply.

Click the Answer Logic icon on any question to open the logic editor. For each possible response:

FieldDescription
Response text The reply text to match (case-insensitive). Leave blank for the “Other response” default row.
Jump to question The question number to send next if this response is matched. Leave blank to proceed to the following question in sequence.

The Other response row at the bottom catches any reply that does not match a specific response text. If no jump is configured there, WEL proceeds to the next question regardless of what the recipient wrote.

Example Question 1: “Are you satisfied with our service? Reply YES or NO.”
Logic: YES → jump to question 3  |  NO → jump to question 2  |  Other → jump to question 2

Survey Options

OptionDescription
Optout text If a recipient replies with this word or phrase at any point, they are removed from the survey and will not receive any further questions. Useful for allowing recipients to exit the survey early.
Survey window How many hours the survey stays open for replies after sending. When the window closes, WEL stops sending further questions and emails the final report. Default: 48 hours.
Report email The email address the response report is sent to when the survey window closes. Defaults to your registered email address.

Sending a Survey

From the survey list, click the Send icon next to the survey you want to send. A list of your recipient lists is shown — tick one or more and click Send/Schedule Job.

You are then taken to the standard final send page where you can send immediately or schedule for a future date and time.

Tip The same survey can be sent multiple times to different lists. Each send is tracked independently and linked in the Jobs Sent column of the survey list.

Viewing Results

Click View Report on any survey to see the responses. The report is a table where:

  • Each row is one recipient
  • Each column is one survey question, with the question text as the column header
  • Each cell shows what that recipient replied to that question
  • Empty cells indicate a question that recipient did not reach — either because branching routed them elsewhere, or the survey window closed before they answered

Click Download Results to export the table as a file for use in a spreadsheet.

A final report is also emailed automatically to your nominated address when the survey window closes. Individual send reports are accessible via the Jobs Sent links on the survey list, or from Reports › All Jobs.
